Lady of Death

The monastery of Our Lady of Death is the most important monument and a famous pilgrimage of Lipsi. It is located in the southeastern part of the island and is dedicated to the memory of the Assumption (August 15th). It is a small church of cruciform shape with arches and a narthex.

The original building was built during the Byzantine era (11th-12th century) by monks of Patmos. It took its name from the painting of the Virgin holding her crucified son. The painting, which is considered miraculous, is housed in the church of St. John the Theologian.

Church of St. John the Theologian

The Church of St. John the Theologian is located in the center of the village, about 50 meters from the beach. It is the cathedral of the village and it was rebuilt in 1931. All expenses were paid by the Brotherhood of people from Lipsi in America and the church was reconstructed on the site of an earlier church from the 17th century. It is a large basilica with a hemispherical dome. The sanctuary is separated from the nave with a wooden temple. This temple includes paintings of western style of the early 20th century.

Hiking Trails of Lipsi

No matter where you are on the island, you will always be close enough (5 km. approximately) to the main town. The island is ideal for trekking excursions, and mountain biking. It is advised to put on a hat for the sun (natural shades are almost non-existent here) and keep bottled water with you at all times. There are many hiking trails on the island but two of them stand out:
